Is Showtime Getting Into The Male Escort Biz?

Is male prostitution an idea whose pop culture time has come? Showtime believes that it may be.

According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, the cable network is currently developing a reality show about male escorts in Las Vegas, to be produced by Relativity Media (the Police Women franchise on TLC). The proposed series will cover the personal lives of the men, which might get dicey considering that what they do for a living is what most of us would refer to as a personal life.

Compared with its rival HBO, Showtime has had little interest in reality programming over the years, though this may be changing. The Real L Word, an adaptation of its long-running drama that focuses on the live of lesbians in Los Angeles, premiered last month. A pair of HBO programs are possible inspirations for the Showtime idea: the mediocre comedy Hung, which stars Thomas Jane as a high school coach/teacher who becomes a man for hire after suffering multiple setbacks; and Cathouse, a sexually explicit look at life inside a legal Nevada brothel.

No further details are yet available about the proposed Showtime series, though the casting process figures to be interesting.
